Pulling Back the Curtain: Hershey Theatre History

Hershey Theatre history is a topic that we are passionate about. This historic gem of Hershey, Pennsylvania, is a must-visit for fans of history and the performing arts. The Hershey Theatre offers an unforgettable experience combining rich history, architectural splendor, and impressive performances, including Broadway productions, concerts, and cultural events.

80 Years of Hershey Theatre History

The Hershey Theatre has a special place in the Hershey chocolate history timeline. Milton S. Hershey envisioned creating a cultural hub in the town known for its chocolate. It was designed by architect C. Emlen Urban in 1915, but the onset of World War I delayed construction.

Construction occurred between 1929 and 1933 as part of Milton Hershey’s “Great Building Campaign” of the Great Depression. Other notable Hershey buildings built during this time include the Hersheypark Stadium and Arena. Since its completion, it has become a venue for world-class performances.

This opulent early 20th-century theatre boasts a seating capacity of 1,904 yet was designed for an intimate viewing experience. The theatre’s architecture was painstakingly built to incorporate classical elements. The blue-and-gold ceiling mosaic in the inner foyer is patterned after St. Mark’s Cathedral in Venice. In the lobby, you’ll find a polished Italian lava rock floor, walls, and arches designed with four types of marble.

The auditorium is where the theatre’s beautiful architecture shines. Highlights include the winged lion that looks out from its perch above the stage, walls reminiscent of a Byzantine castle with balconies on windowed towers, and the dramatic “star and clouds” ceiling.

Hershey Theatre’s event calendar is always packed with an impressive lineup. The Hershey Theatre Broadway Series is particularly popular, offering performances of acclaimed musicals like “Hamilton,” “Mamma Mia!,” “Matilda The Musical,” “The King and I,” and “Mary Poppins.”

Those looking to catch some Hershey Pennsylvania concerts will not be disappointed. The theatre regularly hosts renowned artists, bands, and classical productions. In addition to these events, the Hershey Theatre shows comedies and local groups, including the Hershey Symphony, Central Pennsylvania Ballet, and the Hershey Community Chorus.

One of our favorite ways to celebrate the holidays is to catch seasonal performances such as the annual Hershey Theatre Nutcracker performance. Holiday concerts and events are a yearly tradition that adds a magical touch to the festive season in Hershey.
