For us, there is nothing better than to head out for a long leisurely bike ride on a crisp fall day. Our area is just full of wonderful trails and rides. When time is short, we enjoy a few nice little 6-8 mile loops near The Inn at Westwynd Farm. There are even some good hills to test your fitness. If you are comfortable biking on country roads, we can map out even longer routes for you. When we have more time, we put the rack on the van and head out for one of our favorite trails.
The Jonathan Eshenour Memorial Trail is owned and maintained by the Township of Derry (aka Hershey) and was named in memory of Jonathan Eshenour, a young and vibrant member of our community who was fatally injured in a biking accident.
The 13-mile plus trail travels through most of Hershey and provides access to parks, neighborhoods and commercial establishments. It’s a wonderful avenue to exercise, experience nature, and enjoy the company of friends and family. The trail travels conveniently near the township’s parks and the recreation center, providing additional activities such as sports, fishing, picnicking, and much more.
One of our favorite rides is actually a combination of two trails.
The Conewago Recreation Trail, located between Route 230 and the Lebanon County line, northwest of Elizabethtown. This 5-mile trail, formerly the Cornwall-Lebanon rail line, connects to the Lebanon Valley Rail Trail, and follows the Conewago Creek
Diverse and peaceful, the 5-mile Conewago Trail has a flat cinder and earth surface. The rail-trail passes through wooded sections with a canopy of trees, pastoral meadows, active farms and beautiful sections along the meandering Creek.
The trail links up at the county line with the Lebanon Valley Rail-Trail, which runs another 8 miles to Cornwall. Recently completed additions stretch this rail-trail 20 continuous miles from Elizabethtown to Lebanon. The trail offers beautiful wooded sections as well as lovely farmland views.
The Capitol Greenway is a 20+ mile necklace that rings Harrisburg Pennsylvania’s Capital City, and was designed to provide its visitors an opportunity to hike, ride bicycles, skate, jog, walk their dog, practice up on flora and fauna identification and generally appreciate nature.
The trail has some of the most beautiful and enjoyable natural surroundings that the area has to offer. We especially like the stretch along the Susquehanna River.
The York Heritage Trail is a little bit of a drive but worth it. Established in 1992 and covering 176 acres, the Heritage Rail Trail County Park is 21 miles long and runs north from the Mason Dixon line just south of the Borough of New Freedom through Glen Rock, Hanover Junction, and Seven Valleys to the Colonial Courthouse in the City of York. The trail connects to Maryland’s 20-mile long Northern Central Railroad Trail. In addition to the Colonial Courthouse, three historic structures are located on the trail; Hanover Junction and New Freedom Train Stations and Howard Tunnel.
